Ceramic Process

So, you want to know more about how I work?  Sweet!

Well, right now I don’t have any photos of me actually throwing but here are a few things just off the wheel…

Once the pots are thrown, trimmed, handles attached, and generally finished up they get bisqued.  Here are some bisqued pots

Once bisque fired the pots get a dip in the glaze bucket and then some majolica colors painted on over the raw glaze.  The glaze is a cone 6 majolica (well, I use Zircopax as my whitener not Tin.)

Once the pieces are glaze fired to cone 6 they are either finished or they get a decal.  My decals are original drawings by me which are then printed with ceramic inks by Easy Ceramic Decal in Nebraska.  This is a neat process and very rewarding, but can be time consuming!

Decals have a yellow cover coat that burns off in the firing.

The decals are applied with a rubber kidney.

Once the decals are on the mugs they are put back in the kiln for the third time and refired to about 1300 degrees.

Final product?  It’s awesome!  The decals are permanent and dishwasher safe.
